Matt Jensen is now in his second year coaching at Niwot. Matt is serving this spring as
the JV Head Coach and is off to a good start. His enthusiasm and knowledge of the game
have already made a positive impact on the entire program.
Matt graduated from Boulder High School in 1998. Matt played both basketball and
baseball for Boulder High. In baseball Matt played shortstop and 3rd base for Tyler Munro.
Matt was the starting shortstop for his Legion A team which was coached by Niwot
pitching coach Roger Fisher. That summer Matt hit .430 with 4 home runs.
Matt went on to play at Dakota Wesleyan University and Butler County Community College before tearing his rotator cuff. During
the summers Matt played in the NBC league in Colorado. He played for the Denver Blues who qualified for the National Baseball
Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas. Jensen hit .390 with 7 homers for the Blues who played against Team USA in Wichita
in front of 5,000 fans. Jensen also played for the Boulder Collegians in 2000. The Collegians came back for only a couple of
seasons but in the prime they were the premiere summer team in the country with players such as Joe Carter and Tony Gwynn
playing for them.
Matt graduated in 2001 from the University of Northern Colorado with a bachelors degree in Journalism. After that Matt was a
sportswriter for the Basehor Sentinel in Kansas City. Next Jensen became the clubhouse manager for the Chattanooga Lookouts
(AA team for the Cincinnati Reds). There Jensen worked with Ken Griffey Sr., Chris Sabo, Ryan Freel, Bobby Jenks, Jeff Francour,
and Deangelo Jiminez.
Matt began his coaching career at Boulder High under Jack Taylor. There he coached the Sophomore team for 2 years in the
spring. In the summers he coached the Legion C Team in 2005 and the Legion B Team in 2006.
Matt is currently living in Boulder and works as a substitute teacher and at Old Chicago.
