David is a 1999 graduate of Niwot High School and was a three-sport varsity letterman, earning all area honors in football, basketball, and baseball. David was a member of Niwot's 1998 and 1999 baseball state championship teams. He also was voted Niwot High School's male athlete of the year in 1999.
After graduating from high school, David went on to play football at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. He was an all-conference strong safety and was a captain on Trinity's national runner-up football team of 2002.
